Born on April 5th, 1981 in Long Beach, California, Michael was one four children. He was raised in Garden Grove California, where he attended high school, graduating in 1999. Michael enlisted in the Navy on March 21, 2001, and spent time at a Naval Air Station in Sigonella, Italy after graduating basic training and attending Quartermaster “A” School. He then entered BUD/S, graduating with Class 250 on September 2nd, 2004 and went on to complete other advanced SEAL courses including SEAL Qualification Training which he graduated from in March of 2005. Following this, he was assigned to SEAL Team 3 and deployed to Ramadi with his platoon in April of 2006, serving as a heavy weapons machine gunner.
Michael Monsoor is remembered as one of the bravest men on the battlefield. As someone who held family, faith and his teammates close to his heart, he held a reputation for having the will to lead the fight against the enemy. On many occasions he demonstrated true altruistic actions including an intense situation on May 9th, 2006. On this day, Michael rescued a fellow SEAL who was shot in the leg by running out into the street to provide cover fire so that the wounded man could be dragged to safety. Michael’s actions spoke louder than his calm demeanor, his dedication for his teammates and love for his family never ceased to show itself even in his death. After Michael Monsoor’s passing, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2008 for his actions and a United States Ship was commissioned on January 26th, 2019 in his honor, bearing the name USS Michael Monsoor. Michael is survived by his mother Sally, his father George, his sister Sara, and his two brothers James and Jospeh.
